What Is the Spain Digital Nomad Visa?
Launched in January 2023 under Spain’s Startup Act (Ley de Startups), the Digital Nomad Visa is Spain’s first major residence authorization specifically designed for remote workers and freelancers. It provides a legal pathway
for non-EU/EEA citizens to live and work remotely in Spain — replacing the previous informal practice of entering as tourists for short stays.

The Spain Digital Nomad Visa is open exclusively to non-EU/EEA citizens. Citizens of the European Union and European Economic Area already have the right to work remotely in Spain and do not require this visa. Applicants must also not be in Spain irregularly at the time of application.
Remote Worker Status
Employed or Freelance — Must demonstrate the ability to work remotely via internet connection from Spain
Qualifications
Degree, Certificate, or Experience — University degree, professional certificate, or at least 3 years of relevant work experience
Employer Authorization
Foreign Company Required — Employer must authorize remote work from Spain and have been operating for at least one year
Freelancer Rule
Max 20% Spanish Income — Freelancers may work with Spanish clients, provided no more than 20% of total income comes from Spanish companies
