Portugal D2 Visa (Business / Freelancer)

What is the Portugal D2 Visa?

The D2 visa in Portugal is designed for non-EU nationals who want to live in the country and actively work. It’s the go-to option for freelancers, independent contractors, and entrepreneurs looking to set up a business or join a Portuguese company.

How it Works

Clients apply with a business plan or proof of freelance contracts. Once they get the visa, they enter Portugal and apply for their Temporary Residence (TR) card. From there, they are legally allowed to work, run their company, and earn active income.

Benefits

Work Freedom

They can legally work and run a business in Portugal.

Lower Financial Bar

The minimum income requirement is much lower than Spain's D2 visa.

Path to Permanent Residency

Path to Permanent Residency

Path to Citizenship

After 10 years of residency, they can apply for Portuguese citizenship.

Eligibility Requirements

Proof of Dwelling

They need to show where they will be living.

Financial Means

They must prove they have an income equivalent to the Portuguese minimum wage (€920/month in 2026).

Local Connections

They need to show a service agreement or proposal, proving they already have a client or potential client in Portugal.

Professional Qualifications

If they are in a regulated field (doctors, lawyers, engineers), they need to provide proof of their qualifications.

For Entrepreneurs

If they are opening a company, they need to show the incorporation process and financial resources. While the legal minimum share capital is low, a safe and credible bet is to invest between €5,000 and €6,000.

Processing Time and Process
