What is the Spain D7 Visa?
The D7 visa in Spain, often called the “Non-Lucrative Visa,” is for clients who already have a steady, sustainable stream of passive income (like pensions, dividends, rental income, or royalties) and want to retire or live in Spain without needing to enter the local job market.
How it Works
The client proves they have enough passive income to support themselves and their family without needing to work. Once approved, they move to Spain and enjoy the lifestyle. The catch is that they are strictly forbidden from taking up employment or running a business in Spain (though they can switch to a D2 visa after a year if they change their mind).
Benefits
Fast Family Reunification
Unlike the D2 visa, clients can bring their spouse, partner, and children over at the exact same time they apply.
Path to Citizenship
Like the D2, they can apply for permanent residency and citizenship after just 5 years.
Flexible Income Sources
Spain is quite lenient. They accept passive income, but also allow foreign active income and savings to count toward the financial threshold.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Spain D2, the client needs to check a few boxes:
High Financial Threshold
The bar is higher here. In 2026, the main applicant must prove a minimum monthly income of €2,400 (which is 4 times the IPREM index). They also need to add €600 per month for each dependent family member.
Acceptable Income
If they are using savings to meet this threshold, the money must have been sitting in a bank account for at least 6 months prior to the application. No last-minute deposits!
No Work
They must sign an agreement that they will not work in Spain.
Processing Time and Process
Initial Visa
The initial visa is valid for 1 year.
Residence Card
Once in Spain, they apply for a 1-year Temporary Residence (TR) card.
Renewals
After the first year, the card is renewed every 2 years.
Family Reunification
Spouses, partners, and children can apply simultaneously with the main applicant. Parents and in-laws can only be sponsored after the main applicant reaches permanent residency (after 5 years).
Physical Presence Rule
They must actually live in Spain. They cannot be absent for more than 6 consecutive months, or 10 months total over a 5-year period (extendable to 12 months for work reasons).
