What is the Portugal D7 Visa?
The D7 visa in Portugal is for individuals who have a sustainable, recurring source of passive income (like pensions, dividends, royalties, or interest) and want to live in the country. It’s a great option for retirees or independent investors.
How it Works
The client proves they have enough passive income to support themselves without needing to rely on the Portuguese labor market. Once approved, they enter the country and get their Temporary Residence (TR) card. Unlike Spain’s version of this visa, Portugal actually allows D7 holders to work if they want to.

Low Financial Threshold
The income requirement is very accessible, based simply on the Portuguese minimum wage.
Work Allowed
Unlike the Spain D7, clients are legally permitted to work in Portugal on this visa.
Path to Permanent Residency
After 5 years, they can apply for permanent residency.
Path to Citizenship
After 10 years of residency, they can apply for Portuguese citizenship.
Eligibility Requirements
Financial Means
They must prove a minimum monthly income equal to the Portuguese minimum wage (€920/month in 2026) for the main applicant.
Strictly Passive Income
Portugal is strict about the type of income. It must be passive. If a client is using a fixed deposit or time savings account, Portugal will only count the interest generated by that account, not the principal amount.
For Dependents
They need to add 50% of the minimum wage for a spouse or additional adult, and 30% for each child.
Processing Time and Process
Initial Visa
The initial visa is valid for 4 months.
Residence Card
Within those 4 months, they must enter Portugal and apply for a 2-year Temporary Residence (TR) card.
Renewals
After the initial 2 years, the card is renewed for 3 years at a time.
Family Reunification
The main applicant generally has to wait 2 years of legal residency before bringing family, unless they have minor children (which is an exception).
Physical Presence Rule
They must live there to keep the card. They cannot be absent for more than 6 consecutive months, or 8 months total in any given residency period.
