What is the Portugal D8 Visa?
The Portugal D8 Visa, commonly known as the Digital Nomad Visa, is a residency program designed for non-EU nationals who earn a stable income through remote work, freelancing, consulting, online businesses, or other international income-generating activities. The program allows qualified individuals and their families to legally reside in Portugal while continuing to work for employers, clients, or businesses located outside Portugal
Since October 2022
Since October 2022, Portugal has been issuing Digital Nomad Visas, allowing remote workers and freelancers from non-EU countries to obtain residency.
Residency Pathway
Residency visa valid for four months that allows obtaining a residence permit upon arrival in Portugal. This type of Portugal D8 visa enables the holder to secure a residence permit for two years, renewable for successive periods of three years. After five years, the residence permit can be converted into permanent residence and after ten years into citizenship.

Minimum Income Requirement
The applicant must demonstrate a stable monthly income of at least €3,480 per month (equivalent to four times Portugal’s minimum wage).

Recommended Proof of Funds
Although requirements can vary depending on the consulate and individual circumstances, it is generally recommended to show:

Family Inclusion
A digital nomad obtaining the visa can invite their close family members to Portugal.

It is also possible to include children from 18 to 30years old, provided they are unmarried and financially dependent on the applicant parent.
Portugal generally requires proof of additional financial means for accompanying family members.

A person becomes a tax resident of Portugal if they spend more than 183 days a year within the country. As a tax resident, they are subject to Portuguese income tax on their worldwide income. The income tax rates in Portugal range from 14% to 48%, depending on the amount of income earned.
Digital nomads must ensure they comply with Portuguese tax regulations. This includes registering with the local tax authority, filing annual tax returns, and paying any taxes due. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in penalties and interest charges.
