What is the Spain D2 Visa?
The D2 visa in Spain, officially known as the “Self-Employment Residence Authorization,” is designed for non-EU nationals who want to live in Spain and actively work. It’s perfect for clients who want to start their own business, open a company, or work as independent freelancers. (Note: If they just want to work remotely for a foreign company, they should look into the Digital Nomad visa instead).
How it Works
Once the client gets the visa, they enter Spain and apply for their physical residence card. After that, they are legally allowed to set up shop, hire employees, and start generating revenue. The key here is that they are active contributors to the Spanish economy, not just retirees living off passive income.

Eligibility Requirements

Proof of Accommodation
An initial rental reservation is usually enough to start.
Credible Business Plan
This is crucial. It’s needed for the application and will be required later to open a Spanish bank account.
Financial Means
They must prove they have enough funds to support themselves and the business.
Professional Qualifications
If they are in a regulated field (like doctors, lawyers, or engineers), they must get their foreign degrees validated in Spain.
For Entrepreneurs
If they are incorporating a company, they need to show proof of the company setup and available funds. While the legal minimum share capital is €1, advise them to invest an amount that makes sense for their specific industry (e.g., don't put €1 into a construction company).

Initial Visa
The initial visa is valid for 1 year.
Residence Card
Once in Spain, they get a 1-year Temporary Residence (TR) card.
Renewals
After the first year, the card is renewed every 2 years.
Family Reunification
The main applicant must live in Spain legally for 1 year before they can sponsor their spouse or children. (Parents can only be sponsored after 5 years when they get permanent residency).
Physical Presence Rule
Warn your clients that they actually have to live there! They cannot be absent from Spain for more than 6 consecutive months, or 10 months total over a 5-year period (can be extended to 12 months for work reasons).
